How to Clean Carpets (DIY GUIDE)

Carpets are an integral part of the home. They decorate your floors, provide comfort when you walk on them, and keep dirt from spreading throughout the house. But carpets can get dirty quite easily. This is why it's important to clean them regularly! In this article we will go over what cleaning tools you need for DIY carpet cleaning and how to use these tools properly so that your carpets stay looking great for years!

Vacuum Your Carpets at Least Once a Week to Remove Dirt and Debris

Carpet fibers are delicate! And the more they get walked on, the dirtier they will become. This is why you should vacuum your carpets every week to remove dirt and debris that have accumulated over time. You can use any type of vacuum cleaner for this step; just make sure it has rotating brushes so it agitates the carpet's surface enough to release trapped particles from deep inside its pile.

Start by vacuuming either side of the entire room with an orientation towards where most people walk (so if there’s a hallway going through one end then start in one corner and vacuum to the other).

Mix Baking Soda With Water In A Spray Bottle, Then Spray It

Baking soda is great at absorbing odors like vinegar but has natural deodorizing properties too so it’s perfect for when you have stains on your carpet (such as red wine!). All you need to do is mix baking soda and water into a spray bottle and then spritz the stain. The water will help break down any proteins that are in the carpet, which is what stains them red to begin with! Let sit for about 30 minutes before vacuuming it up.

Avoid Using Harsh Chemicals Such as Bleach or Ammonia

Bleach and ammonia can be very helpful when your carpet has stubborn stains but using these chemicals regularly on carpets can cause too much wear and tear over time (such as fading its color). If you do need to use one of these two cleaners though, mix only half a cup with four cups of cold water so it doesn't disrupt this delicate area further. And make sure not to get bleach on the baseboards or your furniture, as this can strip their finish too.

Allow Your Carpets To Dry Completely Before Walking On Them Again

This is an important step that many people neglect to do! And it's not just because of safety (although you don't want a wet carpet touching your feet). The longer you wait for a rug’s fibers to dry out, the more dirt will accumulate in them when they get walked on again. So make sure you allow carpets to thoroughly air-dry before walking on them - at least 24 hours after cleaning. If there are stubborn stains and odors left over then use some vinegar mixed with hot water and leave it overnight so the bacteria have more time to absorb the odors.

Cleaning Your Carpets Regularly Is Important For Its Longevity

The best way of keeping carpets clean is regular cleaning! And even though it may seem like a lot, you will be rewarded with healthier and more durable carpet that looks great for years to come.
